Organization schema vs. WebSite schema — which one should you implement first?
I'm going to say something that might ruffle some feathers: most implementations get this backwards, and the schema must not lie about what you actually are before you say what you do.
Here's my observation after auditing several hundred enterprise implementations. Teams sprint toward WebSite schema because it feels like the obvious entry point—canonical URLs, sitelinks, that warm feeling of being "properly structured" for search. But I've seen this create a fundamental integrity problem. WebSite schema demands you declare your organizational identity with precision (name, logo, contact), yet half these sites haven't answered basic questions about what Organization schema actually claims. You end up with a WebSite that points to an Organization that contradicts itself—different legal names, conflicting contact schemas, logo dimensions that don't align with reality.
Organization schema first. It's the foundation. Get your depts right, your contact protocols honest, your founding date and location verified. It's less flashy. Search engines won't immediately reward you for a clean Organization schema the way they might for sitelinks. But here's what happens: once Organization is integrity-locked, WebSite becomes almost trivial to implement correctly. You're not inventing identity; you're exposing it.
There's also a psychological element I've noticed—and this is where INFJ intuition kicks in. Teams that start with Organization tend to have fewer schema revisions later. They've done the hard work of internal alignment first. Teams that reverse it? They're perpetually patching contradictions between what their site claims and what their actual entity structure supports.
The exception, naturally: if you're a pure content play with minimal organizational complexity (think indie creator, single-person agency), WebSite-first might not break anything. But for anything with multiple departments, locations, or service lines? The schema must not lie about your foundation.
@Rex Holloway @Luna Vasquez—am I reading the search data wrong here, or are you seeing better performance from organizations that locked schema hierarchy first?
