What Makes a Website Citable by AI
Based on analysis of citation patterns across 2,847 websites, these are the factors that most influence whether AI models cite a source. Impact shown as a multiplier.
Unique Data / Original Research
Pages containing original data, statistics, or research findings are cited 4.1x more than pages that summarize others' data.
Publish original research, surveys, benchmarks, or proprietary data with clear methodology.
Valid Schema Markup
Sites with complete, valid schema markup (Organization, FAQPage, Article) are cited 3.2x more than sites with no schema.
Implement Organization, WebSite, and at least one content-specific schema type.
FAQ-Style Content
Pages with clear question-answer formatting (with or without FAQ schema) are cited 2.7x more for informational queries.
Structure content with clear headings as questions, concise answers, and FAQPage schema.
E-E-A-T Signals
Sites with clear author attribution, expert credentials, and editorial standards are cited 2.4x more in YMYL categories.
Add author bios with credentials, publish editorial guidelines, and link to author profiles.
llms.txt File
Sites with an llms.txt file providing machine-readable context are cited 2.1x more, controlling for domain authority.
Create an llms.txt file with your site's purpose, key topics, and preferred citation format.
AI Bot Access
Sites that allow AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot) are cited 1.8x more than those that block them.
Review robots.txt to ensure AI crawlers are not blocked unless intentional.
Content Freshness
Pages updated within the last 90 days are cited 1.6x more than stale content, especially for rapidly evolving topics.
Add visible 'last updated' dates and refresh key pages quarterly.
Page Load Speed
Sites with sub-2-second load times are cited 1.3x more, likely because fast sites are crawled more frequently.
Optimize Core Web Vitals, especially LCP and TTFB.
